The entry step depends on the grade (A 5 to A 10 step 2, A 11 step 3, A 12 to A 14 step 4, A 15 and A 16 step 6). Steps 1 to 4 take 2 years each, 5 to 8 three years each, 9 and 10 four years each and from step 11 five years each. Click a grade to see gross and net pay by step.

Family allowance, bonus and working hours

Family allowance: €88.03 for married staff, €246.97 for the first and second child, €726 from the third child; slightly more for the first and second child in A 5. The rent level top-up was abolished on 1 October 2026.

There has been no bonus since 2009; it is built into monthly pay. The working week is 40 hours.

Net pay as a civil servant

From gross pay come wage tax, any solidarity surcharge and church tax, and their own private health and care premium; state aid (Beihilfe) covers the rest of medical costs, usually 50% for the civil servant, 70% with two or more children. Work out your net pay with the civil servant pay calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What are German civil servant pay grades?

German civil servants are assigned to pay grades called Besoldungsgruppen. Scale A covers most career tracks from A 2 to A 16; scale B covers senior executive roles. Within each grade, pay increases through experience steps reached roughly every two to four years.

How does federal civil servant pay differ from state civil servant pay in Germany?

Since the 2006 federalism reform, the federal government and each of the 16 states set their own pay tables. Basic pay for the same grade and step can differ by up to 15 percent between the best and lowest-paying employer.

When are German civil servant pay tables updated?

Pay adjustments are enacted annually by law, often with retroactive effect from 1 January or 1 April. This page is updated shortly after the relevant Official Gazette publishes the new table.
