Steps

You start at the first step with an amount: A 3 to A 10 step 2, A 11 step 3, A 12 step 4, A 13 and A 14 step 5, A 15 and A 16 step 6. Steps up to 4 take 2 years each, up to 8 three years each and then 4 years each. Click a grade to see gross and net pay by step.

Family allowance, bonus and working hours

Bavaria pays a location and family allowance based on the location class of the main residence (rent level I to VII): €87.51 to €170.26 for married staff, considerably more with children; single staff only receive it in location class VII. In A 3 to A 10 there is an extra amount per child.

An annual bonus is paid in December: 70% (A 3 to A 11) or 65% of one month’s pay, the location and family allowance at 84.29%, plus €99.96 in A 3 to A 8 and €25.56 per child. The working week is 40 hours.

Net pay as a civil servant

Civil servants (Beamte) pay no pension, unemployment or statutory health insurance contributions. From gross pay come wage tax, any solidarity surcharge and church tax, and their own private health and care premium; state aid (Beihilfe) covers the rest of medical costs, usually 50% for the civil servant, 70% with two or more children. Work out your net pay with the civil servant pay calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What are German civil servant pay grades?

German civil servants are assigned to pay grades called Besoldungsgruppen. Scale A covers most career tracks from A 2 to A 16; scale B covers senior executive roles. Within each grade, pay increases through experience steps reached roughly every two to four years.

How does federal civil servant pay differ from state civil servant pay in Germany?

Since the 2006 federalism reform, the federal government and each of the 16 states set their own pay tables. Basic pay for the same grade and step can differ by up to 15 percent between the best and lowest-paying employer.

When are German civil servant pay tables updated?

Pay adjustments are enacted annually by law, often with retroactive effect from 1 January or 1 April. This page is updated shortly after the relevant Official Gazette publishes the new table.
