What this calculator shows, and what it doesn't

This is the annual tax-return view: 2026 brackets plus the standard deduction. It is not per-paycheck W-4 withholding, which uses separate IRS tables and self-corrects at filing time. Popular calculator sites silently mix the two models, which is why their answers for the same salary differ by thousands. We label ours. State coverage: all 50 states and DC are modelled: the 9 no-tax states exactly, 14 flat-tax states and 28 graduated-tax states as estimates (state deductions, credits and local taxes are not all modelled). Frequently asked questions

How is federal income tax calculated in the US in 2026?

The IRS uses seven brackets: 10, 12, 22, 24, 32, 35 and 37 percent. Each rate applies only to income in that bracket, not to all income. The calculator uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction.

Does state income tax apply to all states?

No. Nine states have no broad-based income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. The remaining states and DC each have their own rates, all modelled in this calculator.

What are Social Security and Medicare taxes?

Social Security is 6.2 percent of wages up to $176,100 (the 2026 wage base). Medicare is 1.45 percent on all wages, plus an additional 0.9 percent on wages above $200,000 for single filers.

How does a 401(k) contribution change my take-home pay?

Traditional 401(k) contributions reduce your taxable income dollar for dollar. If you contribute $10,000 and your marginal federal rate is 22 percent, your federal tax bill falls by $2,200. State income tax savings add to that in most states. The net cost of saving $10,000 is often only $6,000 to $7,500. Enable the 401(k) field in the calculator to see the exact effect for your salary and state.

Is there no tax on tips and overtime in 2026?

Yes. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act extension (2026) includes a deduction for qualified tip income and eligible overtime pay. The deduction is not a full exemption and phases out at higher income levels. See our guide on the no-tax-on-tips and overtime deduction for the precise rules.
