Irish tax credits and rate bands 2026, explained

Ireland taxes in two simple steps, 20% up to your band, 40% above, and then subtracts credits euro-for-euro. Understanding both is the difference between guessing and knowing your payslip.

Rate bands 2026

Status20% band
Single€44,000
Married, one income€53,000
Married, two incomesup to €88,000 (one spouse at most €53,000)
Single parent€48,000

Everything above the band is taxed at 40%. Couples with two incomes share up to €88,000 of band, but one spouse can use at most €53,000, so the full band only helps when the second earner has at least €35,000 of income.

Credits: euro for euro

Credits reduce your tax bill directly, not your income. Nearly every employee gets the personal credit (€2,000) and the employee/PAYE credit (€2,000), €4,000 off the bill, which is why income under about €20,000 pays no income tax at all.

The credits people forget

  • Rent tax credit, for private renters; claim through myAccount, including for prior years.
  • Home carer credit (€1,950), married one-income couples caring for children; frequently missed.
  • Single person child carer (€1,900), plus the wider €48,000 band.
  • Remote working relief, 30% of your electricity, heating and broadband bills for the days you worked from home, relieved at your highest tax rate.
  • Medical expenses, 20% back on qualifying costs, including GP visits.

A myAccount review of the last four years can recover credits you did not claim at the time.

How it plays out

At €45,000 single: 20% of €44,000 plus 40% of €1,000, minus €4,000 credits = €5,200 income tax, before USC and PRSI, which have their own rules (explained here). Check any salary on our per-salary pages, e.g. €45,000 after tax, or the full calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard rate band for a single person in Ireland in 2026?

A single person pays 20% on the first €44,000 of income and 40% on any amount above that. The band is €48,000 for single parents and €53,000 for married couples with one income.

How much are the personal and PAYE tax credits in 2026?

Each credit is €2,000, giving most employees €4,000 combined to deduct directly from their income tax bill. This is why income under about €20,000 pays no income tax after both credits are applied.

Can I claim the rent tax credit for previous years?

Yes. The rent tax credit can be claimed through Revenue myAccount for prior years as well as the current year, so private renters who missed it in earlier years can still recover it.
