How it works

Resident income tax uses the legislated 2026-27 brackets (nil to $18,200, then 15%, 30%, 37% and 45%) with the low income tax offset. The Medicare levy is 2% with low-income shading; the shading uses the 2025-26 single threshold of $28,011 until the 2026-27 figure is announced. Study-loan repayments follow the marginal system introduced in 2025-26. Employer super guarantee is 12% and shown separately. Details on the Australia methodology page.

Frequently asked questions

How is income tax calculated in Australia for 2026-27?

Australia uses a progressive tax scale. In 2026-27 there is no tax on the first $18,200, then 15 percent up to $45,000, 30 percent up to $135,000, 37 percent up to $190,000 and 45 percent above that. The Low Income Tax Offset (up to $700) reduces the bill further.

What is the Medicare Levy?

The Medicare Levy is 2 percent of taxable income and funds the public health system. It applies once income exceeds the low-income threshold. A surcharge applies if you earn above $93,000 and do not have private hospital cover.

Does superannuation reduce my take-home pay?

Compulsory super is paid by your employer on top of your salary at 12 percent for 2026-27 (up from 11.5 percent the previous year). It does not reduce your take-home pay directly, but salary sacrifice super contributions do.

What is the HECS/HELP repayment threshold for 2026-27?

HECS/HELP repayments begin once your income reaches $69,528 for 2026-27. Repayments are calculated as a percentage of total income, starting at 1 percent and rising to 10 percent for high earners. Enable the HECS/HELP toggle in the calculator to see your repayment amount.
