How it works
Income tax uses IRD's individual rates (10.5% to 39%). The ACC earners' levy is 1.75% up to the maximum liable earnings. KiwiSaver is deducted at your chosen rate; the Independent Earner Tax Credit ($520) applies between $24,000 and $70,000 if you're eligible. Student loan repayments are 12% over the annual threshold. Our weekly figures reconcile with IRD's IR340 tables, see the NZ methodology page.

Frequently asked questions
What is the PAYE tax rate in New Zealand?
New Zealand PAYE uses progressive brackets: 10.5 percent to $14,000, 17.5 percent to $48,000, 30 percent to $70,000, 33 percent to $180,000 and 39 percent above that.
What is KiwiSaver?
KiwiSaver is New Zealand's workplace savings scheme. From 1 April 2026 the default employee contribution is 3.5 percent of gross earnings, which reduces your take-home pay but builds retirement savings. Employers contribute a minimum of 3.5 percent on top. You can opt to contribute at 3, 4, 6, 8 or 10 percent instead.
Do I need to pay ACC levies on my salary?
Yes. The ACC earners' levy for 2026-27 is 1.75 percent ($1.75 per $100 of liable earnings), capped at $156,641. It funds the Accident Compensation Corporation, which covers work and non-work accidents.
What is the Independent Earner Tax Credit (IETC)?
The IETC is a tax credit of up to $520 per year for New Zealand residents who do not receive Working for Families, a main benefit or NZ Superannuation. It applies in full between $24,000 and $66,000, then reduces at 13 cents per dollar and reaches zero at $70,000. Use tax code ME (instead of M) on your IR330 to have the credit applied through PAYE.
When do student loan repayments start in New Zealand?
New Zealand-based borrowers repay through PAYE once their annual income exceeds the repayment threshold, which is $24,128 for 2026-27. The standard repayment rate is 12 percent of income above the threshold. Use tax code M SL or ME SL on your IR330, or enable the student loan toggle in this calculator.
