Required Salary Calculator NZ 2026-27
Start from the number that matters, what you need each month, and work backwards to the salary you should ask for.
| Required gross (annual) | $67,722 |
|---|---|
| Total deductions | $13,722 |
| Take-home (annual) | $54,000 |
Assumptions: Tax code M, no student loan, KiwiSaver excluded. Solved by bisection against the same engine as the main calculator, accurate to the cent of the target.
Why you can't just multiply
Tax is progressive: the deductions on your last unit of income are higher than on the first. A fixed "multiply by X" rule of thumb is wrong at almost every income level, and badly wrong near thresholds. This tool inverts the full tax calculation instead, so the answer is exact under the stated assumptions. Fine-tune your KiwiSaver rate, a student loan or IETC eligibility in the main New Zealand calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my required gross salary in New Zealand?
Enter your desired net income and the calculator applies PAYE tax in reverse, including ACC levies and KiwiSaver contributions, to tell you the gross salary you need.
Does KiwiSaver affect the required gross?
Yes. If you contribute 3 percent to KiwiSaver your required gross is higher than if you contribute nothing. Select your contribution rate in the calculator.
Why is the required gross much higher than the net?
Because PAYE, ACC levies and KiwiSaver together can take 25 to 45 percent of income depending on the salary level. On NZD 80,000 about 30 percent goes to tax and deductions.
