Required Salary Calculator Australia 2026-27
Start from the number that matters, what you need each month, and work backwards to the salary you should ask for.
| Required gross (annual) | $83,118 |
|---|---|
| Total deductions | $17,118 |
| Take-home (annual) | $66,000 |
Assumptions: Australian resident, tax-free threshold, no study loan; super is paid on top. Solved by bisection against the same engine as the main calculator, accurate to the cent of the target.
Why you can't just multiply
Tax is progressive: the deductions on your last unit of income are higher than on the first. A fixed "multiply by X" rule of thumb is wrong at almost every income level, and badly wrong near thresholds. This tool inverts the full tax calculation instead, so the answer is exact under the stated assumptions. Fine-tune residency, a HELP/HECS loan, salary-sacrificed super or a package that includes super in the main Australia calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the gross salary I need in Australia?
Enter your target net (take-home) income and the calculator applies the 2026 tax scale, Medicare Levy and any other deductions in reverse to give you the gross salary to negotiate.
Do salary sacrifice arrangements affect this calculation?
Yes. Pre-tax super contributions and other salary sacrifice items reduce your taxable income, which means you need a lower gross to reach the same net. Enter any sacrifice amounts in the calculator.
Why is the required gross higher than my target net?
Income tax and the Medicare Levy together take between 19 and 45 percent of income above the tax-free threshold. On a salary around $80,000 you keep roughly 70 percent of each extra dollar.
