German civil servants (Beamte) pay no social insurance: only wage tax, any solidarity surcharge and church tax, and their own private health insurance premium come off gross pay. Example NRW: grade A 13 at step 5 pays €5,221.48 gross; single, tax class I and with €300 health insurance, about €3,805.73 net a month is left.
Listed in the housing benefit rent level list for your municipality.
Preset to an example of €300. Enter your own premium; state aid (Beihilfe) covers the rest of the costs.

The tables have different steps and status. The increase is enacted in Berlin, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, NRW, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein. Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Bremen pay a provisional advance. In Brandenburg, Hamburg and Thuringia the old table still applies and the increase is a bill. At federal level the 2024 table legally applies; the advances since 2025 can be added as an estimate in the calculator.

How the calculator works

Gross pay is basic pay plus family allowance and, where it applies, a structural or post allowance. Wage tax comes from the official 2026 program for civil servants: without pension and unemployment insurance and with the basic private health premium as the tax allowance for contributions. There is no employer subsidy for health insurance, because state aid (Beihilfe) reimburses part of medical costs: usually 50% for the civil servant, 70% with two or more children.

Your private health premium

Private health and care premiums differ for everyone and depend on age, tariff and health. The calculator uses €300 as an example; enter your own premium. For wage tax only the basic cover share counts, which your insurer reports electronically to the tax office; if you know it, enter it under more options.

In some states, such as Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony, civil servants can choose a flat-rate state aid (pauschale Beihilfe) and stay in statutory health insurance; the employer then pays half of the health insurance premium. The calculator does not cover this option yet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the experience step?

Basic pay rises with time in service in experience steps (Erfahrungsstufen). How long each step lasts and where you start differs by pay law; the table pages explain it for each employer.

What about child benefit?

Child benefit (Kindergeld) is paid separately by the Familienkasse. The family allowance for children is part of pay and taxed.

Are all states included?

Yes, the calculator covers the federal level and all 16 states with their own tables, family allowances and bonuses. Hesse and Saxony pay their bonus monthly; there it is included in gross pay.
