Swiss withholding tax: the expat's first payslip surprise
How the tariff works
Your employer deducts tax monthly using cantonal tariff tables keyed by codes for marital status, children and church membership. The tariffs are built to approximate the ordinary tax at an average commune, so for a feel of your net pay our Switzerland calculator, which models the ordinary assessment in the cantonal capital, lands close for most source-taxed employees too.
The 120,000 franc rule
Cross CHF 120,000 of gross salary in a year and federal law requires a subsequent ordinary assessment: you file a return, tax is computed exactly like a local's, the withheld amounts are credited, and the filing duty stays for future years. Depending on your commune, that recalculation can be cheaper or dearer than the tariff was.
Filing voluntarily below the threshold
Source-taxed residents can request an ordinary assessment until the end of March of the following year. It pays when you have deductions the tariff only averages: pension buy-ins, pillar 3a savings, training costs, or commuting. The catch: the choice binds you for future years, so in a high-tax commune it can backfire. Compare before applying; this is arithmetic, not tax advice.
Frequently asked questions
I just married. Does my code change?
Yes, civil-status changes apply from the following month. Tell your employer promptly so the tariff code follows.
Does withholding apply to cross-border commuters?
Generally yes, with treaty rules. Commuters living in Germany are taxed at source at most 4.5% (tariff codes L, M, N or P) if they hand in the Gre-1 certificate and do not stay away more than 60 nights for work. For France, a 1983 agreement covers eight cantons, while Geneva taxes French residents at source.
What happens when I get the C permit?
Withholding stops the following month and you switch to paying by invoice under the ordinary assessment, like Swiss citizens. Budget for the tax bills yourself from then on.
Legal basis: Art. 89 DBG and the withholding ordinance, CHF 120,000 threshold as of 2026. Last updated 2026-11-04.
