Denmark methodology (2026)
Model
Ordinary salaried employee with no capital income and no pension contributions, municipal tax at the 2026 national average unless you change it, church tax off by default since only members of the Folkekirke pay it.
Source
Rates come from Skatteministeriet's published satser og belobsgraenser i lovgivningen: personskatteloven for bundskat, the three bracket surcharges, personfradrag and the skatteloft; ligningsloven for beskaeftigelsesfradrag and jobfradrag; arbejdsmarkedsbidragsloven for the 8% contribution. Municipal and church averages come from the ministry's published 2026 figures, which are weighted rather than the simple averages several secondary sites publish.
The 2026 four bracket reform
Until 2026 Denmark had bundskat and a single topskat. The reform split the upper end into mellemskat at 7.5% from 641,200, topskat at 7.5% from 777,900 and toptopskat at 5% from 2,592,700, all measured on personal income. They are cumulative, so above the highest threshold the state surcharge totals 20%.
Two bases
Personlig indkomst is gross less the 8% am-bidrag, and it carries bundskat and all three bracket taxes. Skattepligtig indkomst is that figure less the ligningsmaessige fradrag, namely beskaeftigelsesfradrag at 12.75% capped at 63,300 and jobfradrag at 4.5% above 235,200 capped at 3,100, and it carries municipal and church tax only. The personfradrag of 54,100 is set against both.
Scope and limits
The skatteloft is deliberately not implemented. At the national average municipal rate of 25.049% the capped rates sum to 44.559%, just under the statutory 44.57% ceiling, so the default is unaffected; only municipalities above roughly 25.06% are touched, and since the highest 2026 rate is 26.30% the overstatement is at most about 1.2 percentage points on the top slice. Also excluded: the extra employment deduction for single parents (11.5%, up to 50,600) and for seniors (1.4%, up to 6,100), the ekstra pensionsfradrag, and commuting deductions. Each of those would reduce tax further.
Two corrections from our own research
Earlier research for this country recorded the seniorfradrag as 8.5% capped at 37,000. The statute gives 1.4% capped at 6,100, so that gap was far smaller than claimed. It also recorded the skatteloft as 52.07% and 57.07%; those are the effective marginal ceilings including municipal tax, while the statutory figure is 44.57%. Both were corrected against the ministry's tables.
Verification
Twenty three automated tests cover the published rates, the two base structure, the deduction caps, all three bracket thresholds expressed in gross terms, the 55.9% and 60.5% marginal rates and the ceiling headroom. The engine reproduces a published Copenhagen take-home figure exactly at the city's own municipal and church rates.
