  • Income year 2026, salaried employee. Municipal tax 25.049%.
  • Employment and job deductions reduce municipal tax only. Bundskat and the bracket taxes are charged on income after the 8% labour market contribution but before those deductions.
  • No church tax: assumes you are not a member of the Folkekirke, which about a quarter of taxpayers are not.
  • Excludes the skatteloft, the extra employment deductions for single parents and seniors, pension contributions and commuting deductions.

The 2026 four bracket reform

Until 2026 Denmark had bundskat and a single topskat. The reform split the upper end into three: mellemskat at 7.5%, topskat at 7.5% and toptopskat at 5%. They are cumulative, so above the highest threshold all three apply together for a 20% state surcharge on top of bundskat and municipal tax.

Two bases, two sets of deductions

The employment deduction, worth up to DKK 63,300, and the job deduction, worth up to DKK 3,100, reduce your municipal tax only. Bundskat and the three bracket taxes are charged on personal income before those deductions apply. The personfradrag of DKK 54,100 is set against both.

Frequently asked questions

What changed in Danish tax for 2026?

The 2026 reform replaced the old two step state tax with four cumulative brackets. Bundskat stays at 12.01%, and mellemskat at 7.5% and toptopskat at 5% are both new, joining topskat at 7.5%. Above the highest threshold the three surcharges stack to 20% on top of bundskat and municipal tax.

Why do the employment deductions not reduce my bundskat?

Denmark taxes two bases. Bundskat and all three bracket surcharges are charged on personlig indkomst, which is your pay after the 8% labour market contribution. Municipal and church tax are charged on skattepligtig indkomst, which is that figure less the employment and job deductions. Those deductions therefore cut your municipal tax only.

What is AM-bidrag?

The arbejdsmarkedsbidrag is a labour market contribution of 8% taken off gross pay before any other tax is calculated. Every threshold in the Danish system is quoted after it has been deducted, which is why a mellemskat threshold of 641,200 corresponds to a much higher gross salary.

How much does my municipality matter?

Municipal tax is the single largest deduction for most Danes. The national average for 2026 is 25.05%, Copenhagen is the lowest at 23.39% and the highest municipalities reach 26.3%. Church tax is separate and only applies to members of the Folkekirke.
