- Income year 2026, employee under 66. Municipal tax 32.38% and burial fee 0.26%.
- The general pension contribution is credited back in full against income tax, so it is normally neutral; it still shows as a deduction because it appears on your payslip.
- No church fee: assumes you are not a member of a registered religious community.
What makes 2026 different
2026 is the tenth step of the jobbskatteavdrag since 2007 and the most consequential Swedish tax change in years. The credit rose to roughly SEK 52,390 a year at the average municipal rate, and the taper that used to claw it back from higher earners was abolished, so it now holds at its maximum all the way up the income scale. Many calculators still show the 2025 figure and understate take-home pay as a result.

Skiktgräns and brytpunkt are not the same number
Swedish state tax is widely quoted as starting at SEK 643,000, and that is correct, but it applies to taxable income after the basic deduction. The figure to compare against your actual salary is the brytpunkt of SEK 660,400. Mixing the two up is the most common mistake in English language descriptions of Swedish tax, and it leads people to believe they are below the state tax threshold when they are above it.

Frequently asked questions
What is jobbskatteavdrag and how much is it worth?
The earned income tax credit is the largest single tax reduction for Swedish employees. In 2026 it is worth up to about SEK 52,390 a year at the national average municipal rate. The 2026 reform raised it again and removed the taper that used to withdraw it from higher earners, so it now stays at its maximum rather than falling away.
When do I start paying state income tax in Sweden?
State income tax of 20% applies above a skiktgräns of SEK 643,000, but that figure is taxable income after the basic deduction. The number to compare against your salary is the brytpunkt, which is SEK 660,400 for people under 66. Comparing your gross pay against the skiktgräns instead will tell you that you are below the threshold when you are above it.
Does Sweden have a minimum wage?
No. Sweden has no statutory minimum wage. Pay floors are set entirely through collective agreements negotiated between unions and employer organisations for each sector, so there is no single national figure that applies to everyone.
Why does my municipality change the result so much?
Municipal tax is the largest single tax most Swedes pay and it is set locally. The national average for 2026 is 32.38%, but rates run from roughly 29% to 36% depending on where you live, which is a spread of several thousand kronor a year at an average salary.
