How the German pension is calculated
Each year of contributions earns pension points (Entgeltpunkte): your annual gross divided by average earnings, provisionally €51,944 for 2026. Earning exactly the average gives one point, capped at 1.9521 points at the €101,400 contribution ceiling. The monthly pension is points times the adjustment factor times the pension value, €42.52 since 1 July 2026. Forty average years therefore pay €1,700.80 gross a month.
Retiring early or late
The regular retirement age is 67 for anyone born in 1964 or later. Each month earlier cuts the pension by 0.3% for life; each month later adds 0.5%. Retiring two years early costs 7.2% permanently.
What comes off a German pension
Retirees pay half the health insurance contribution, 7.3% plus half the supplementary rate, and the whole care insurance contribution, 3.6% or 4.2% without children. For pensions starting in 2026, 84% is taxable, rising half a point for each later year. With no other income, many pensions stay below the tax-free allowance.

Frequently asked questions
Why "in today's money"?
The calculator assumes your pay keeps pace with average wages and values everything at today's pension value, so the result compares with today's prices. The euro amount you receive will be higher after future pension increases.
I worked abroad. Does that count?
EU and treaty countries count insurance periods for eligibility, but each country pays its own pension for the years worked there. Enter only your German points here.
What is not included?
Child-rearing credits, disability and survivor pensions, company and private pensions, and other income that raises the tax.
