When you need this

Salary negotiations ("I need €2,800 net, what must the contract say?"), relocating to Germany and translating your home take-home into a German offer, or checking what a different tax class would require. Because German taxes are progressive and social contributions have caps, no fixed multiplier works, the calculator inverts the full official computation instead, to the cent. The forward direction with children, church tax and insurer options is the Germany salary calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate gross salary from net in Germany?

The reverse calculation is complex because income tax and social contributions are non-linear. Enter your target net salary in the calculator and it works backwards to find the gross you need to ask for.

Why is the required gross much higher than my target net?

German income tax, solidarity surcharge and social insurance contributions together can take 35 to 45 percent of a mid-range salary. For every 1 EUR net you want, you may need 1.50 to 1.80 EUR gross.

Does tax class affect the gross-to-net calculation?

Yes significantly. Tax class 3 (married, higher earner) results in lower tax withholding, so less gross is needed for the same net than in class 1.
