The 14-salary system in one paragraph

Your contract quotes a monthly gross paid 14 times: 12 regular months plus holiday pay in summer and Christmas pay in winter. The two extra salaries carry at most 17.07% social insurance and, after a €620 allowance, a flat 6% wage tax, far below the regular tariff. That is why the payslips with the 13th and 14th salary are noticeably larger (holiday pay usually in June or July, Christmas pay in November or December, depending on the collective agreement) and why Austrian salaries cannot be compared to German ones by multiplying by twelve. What changed in 2026

The lower five bracket thresholds rose 1.73% because the automatic inflation adjustment offsets two thirds of the 2.6% inflation, the contribution ceiling jumped to €6,930 per month, and Vienna raised its housing levy, putting Viennese employees at 18.32% social insurance against 18.07% everywhere else. The calculator has a state toggle for exactly this. Sources on the methodology page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the quoted monthly salary paid 12 or 14 times?

14 times for virtually all employees under collective agreements. A €3,500 offer means €49,000 gross per year, not €42,000.

Does this match the official calculator?

Yes. Automated tests check six fixtures from the official BMF gross-to-net calculator, including Vienna variants, to within a few cents before every deploy.

What is not included?

Commuter allowance (Pendlerpauschale), family bonuses and children, company cars and other benefits in kind. Each result lists its assumptions.

What is the income tax-free threshold in Austria in 2026?

The tax-free threshold is €13,539 per year for 2026, after the annual inflation adjustment lifted all lower bracket limits by 1.73%. Income up to this amount is taxed at 0%. The first taxable rate of 20% applies between €13,539 and €21,992. For an employee paid 14 times a year, this equates to roughly €967 gross per month.

Does Austria have a minimum wage?

Austria has no single statutory minimum wage. Pay floors are set by collective agreements (Kollektivverträge) negotiated between employer associations and unions for each industry. Social partners have committed to raising all collective minimums to at least €2,000 gross per month; many sectors already exceed this target.
