Singapore residents pay income tax at progressive rates from 0% to 24%. There is no monthly withholding: IRAS assesses your total income after the year ends and issues a Notice of Assessment. At $5,000/month ($60,000/year) the effective rate is approximately 1.7%. At $10,000/month it rises to about 4.7%.

Chargeable income is gross minus personal reliefs

Tax is calculated on chargeable income, not gross salary. Chargeable income = gross income minus personal reliefs. Key reliefs for employees include:

  • Earned income relief: S$1,000 for residents aged 55 and below; higher for older workers.
  • CPF relief: employee CPF contributions (ordinary wages up to the S$8,000 monthly ceiling).
  • NSman, parent, spouse, child and other reliefs where applicable.

All personal reliefs combined are capped at S$80,000 per year. See the income tax reliefs guide for a full list.

Worked examples (2026 income, citizen or PR, age 55 or below)

Monthly gross Annual gross Income tax Effective rate
$5,000/month $60,000 $1,040.00 1.7%
$10,000/month $120,000 $5,627.00 4.7%
$15,000/month $180,000 $13,920.00 7.7%

Examples use earned income relief (S$1,000) and CPF relief on ordinary wages as the only reliefs. Your actual tax will differ if you claim additional reliefs.

No payroll withholding for residents

Unlike most countries, Singapore does not deduct income tax from residents' monthly salaries. Employers submit employment income data to IRAS (via auto-inclusion), IRAS pre-fills the tax return, and you receive a Notice of Assessment. Most residents then pay by 12 interest-free GIRO monthly instalments starting in May. This means your take-home in Singapore is closer to gross salary minus CPF, without any income tax withheld each month.

Frequently asked questions

Does Singapore withhold income tax from my monthly salary?

No. Singapore does not withhold income tax from employees who are tax residents. IRAS assesses your total income for the year and sends a Notice of Assessment (NOA). Most residents pay via 12 GIRO instalments. Only non-residents' employment income is subject to withholding at source.

When do I need to file my Singapore income tax return?

Residents must file by 18 April (electronic) or 15 April (paper). IRAS pre-fills most salary data from employer submissions, so for employees with straightforward income the filing is quick. You only need to add items like rental income, personal reliefs not captured by your employer, or foreign-sourced income.

Are CPF contributions deductible for income tax?

Yes. The employee CPF contribution is a personal relief that reduces chargeable income. This means income tax is calculated on gross salary minus your employee CPF contribution (subject to the annual CPF relief cap). The overall S$80,000 personal-relief cap applies across all reliefs combined.
