Pension tax relief in Ireland: what a contribution really costs

Pension contributions get income-tax relief at your highest rate, 40% for many full-time earners. On €55,000, a 10% contribution of €5,500 reduces 2026 take-home by only €3,300: the rest is income tax you stop paying. USC and PRSI still apply to the contributed amount.

Relief at the marginal rate

Contributions to an occupational scheme, PRSA or personal pension come off your income before income tax. A 40% taxpayer saves 40 cents per euro, a 20% taxpayer saves 20 cents. USC and PRSI are still charged on the full salary, so for a 40% taxpayer the paycheck drops by exactly 60% of the contribution. Try your own figures in the Ireland salary calculator, which models relief the same way Revenue applies it through payroll.

The age-based limits

AgeMax % of earnings with relief
Under 3015%
30 to 3920%
40 to 4925%
50 to 5430%
55 to 5935%
60 and over40%

The percentages apply to earnings up to the €115,000 cap. Contributions beyond your age limit are allowed but get no relief in that year; the excess carries forward against future years' limits. Employer contributions to an occupational scheme do not use up your personal percentage.

Payroll relief or claim it back?

Through an employer scheme the relief is automatic in each payslip. For a personal PRSA paid from your bank account, you claim the relief through Revenue myAccount and receive it as adjusted tax credits or a refund. The effect over the year is identical; only the timing differs.

Auto-enrolment: MyFutureFund

Ireland's auto-enrolment scheme, MyFutureFund, has been live since 1 January 2026. In phase 1 the employee contribution is 1.5% of gross pay, on earnings up to €80,000. Our salary calculator does not deduct MyFutureFund contributions automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Do I save USC and PRSI too?

No. Pension relief applies to income tax only. USC and PRSI are computed on pay before pension deductions.

I pay only 20% tax. Is a pension still worth it?

The relief is smaller, so the case rests more on employer matching and long-term growth. Standard-rate earners often prioritize the match level. General information, not financial advice.

Does the €115,000 cap limit what I can contribute?

No, it caps the earnings the relief percentage is applied to. You can contribute more; the excess simply gets no relief that year.
