  • Income year 2026, assessment year 2027. Single, no dependants, municipal surcharge 7.0%.
  • The exempt amount reduces the bill by 25% of itself rather than removing that much income, which is how Belgian tax actually grants it.
  • Excludes the werkbonus and the low-income tax credit, so tax is overstated for lower earners, and excludes the special social security contribution, which would push the other way.

The exempt amount is a reduction, not a deduction

This is the part that trips people up. The belastingvrije som of EUR 11,180 does not come off your income before the brackets apply. It is granted as a tax reduction valued at the lowest bracket rate, so it cuts the bill by 25% of that amount. The tax administration's own worked example sets this out step by step, and this calculator follows it.

Income year 2026 is assessment year 2027

Belgium quotes the same tax two different ways, and the brackets genuinely differ between them. Income year 2026 uses EUR 16,720, EUR 29,510 and EUR 51,070 as its thresholds, where income year 2025 used 16,320, 28,800 and 49,840. A figure labelled only "2026" could be either, which is why this page states the income year throughout.

What this does not include

The werkbonus and the tax credit for low activity income are not modelled, so results for lower earners show more tax than they would actually pay. The special social security contribution is also excluded, which runs the other way. Increases in the exempt amount for dependants are not applied.

Frequently asked questions

Is the exempt amount taken off my income?

No. The belastingvrije som is granted as a tax reduction worth the lowest bracket rate, so an exempt amount of EUR 11,180 reduces your bill by 25% of that figure rather than removing that much income from the calculation. Treating it as an income deduction overstates the benefit considerably.

Which year do Belgian tax figures refer to?

Belgium labels the same tax two ways: income year 2026 is assessment year 2027. A calculator showing what you earn now wants the income year 2026 figures. Sources that say only "2026" without specifying which sense are ambiguous, and the two years have genuinely different brackets.

What is the municipal surcharge?

The aanvullende gemeentebelasting is charged as a percentage of your income tax, not of your income. Rates run from 0% to about 9% depending on the municipality, with 7% close to the national average and also the flat rate applied to non residents.

Why does the top rate arrive so early?

Belgium reaches its 50% band at EUR 51,070 of net taxable income, which is low by European standards. Combined with social security at 13.07% and the municipal surcharge, that gives Belgium one of the highest effective burdens on middle incomes in the European Union.
